Our 5 Favourite Kitchen Plants

The kitchen is one of the best places to add a splash of greenery in your home. It is close to water, receives natural sunlight from windows and sliding doors, and it adds a ton of character.

Looking for ideas? Here are five different plants that will work great in your kitchen.

1. Herbs

Kitchen herbs are known to be one of the easiest herbs to grow indoors and should be a staple in your kitchen. They work great for decor and for cooking, warming up your space and giving it a fresh feeling. Most herbs – like basil, parsley, thyme, rosemary and sage – don’t require a ton of maintenance, can punch up your meals, and help you save a few bucks at the grocery store.

To keep the soil moist and the roots growing, herbs need to be watered once a week. Most need about six hours per day of direct sunlight so your best bet is to place them on the windowsill or counter.

2. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is not only a lovely kitchen accent but self-regenerating first aid kit. Aloe vera plants are great for your skin and a nice natural remedy if you happen to have a kitchen burn. Simply cut off a lower section of the leaf, slice it open, and squeeze out the gel inside before applying to affected areas.

Aloe plants thrive in temperatures between 13 and 27 degrees Celsius if you give them strong indirect sunlight. Place them near a kitchen window or next to the sliding door. In the spring and summer, water them every two weeks, and every four weeks in the fall and winter.

3. Ivy

Ivy plants are among the simplest houseplants to grow, and they give a lovely splash of green to any kitchen. They are known to help purify the air, minimizing indoor air pollutants like mould, bacteria, formaldehyde, and more. Ivies can be displayed in your kitchen on high shelf or in a hanging basket. Indoor Ivy plants often do not rot, or have trouble with pests or disease. However, keep out of reach from your pets since they can be toxic to them.

Ivy plants only need moderate amounts of sunlight and require watering once every two weeks or so.

4. Pothos

Pothos is one of the best houseplants for improving indoor air quality and creating a cleaner living space, helping with allergies and leading to mental health benefits. Their long stems are versatile for hanging baskets, shelves, and plant stands, creating a stylish accent however you place them.

Pothos plants require little attention. Every two weeks, add a few drops of liquid fertilizer to the water to nourish the plant. In a clean setting, these plants can survive for several months or even years.

5. Succulents

Succulents make excellent kitchen plants. They are known to grow in environments with low humidity and moderate light. They are a modern addition to your kitchen’s décor and add fresh oxygen as they help purify the air.

Due to their ability to retain water for longer periods of time and their need for direct sunlight, succulents require little maintenance.
