​How to Start Decluttering Your Kitchen for 2021

We are officially less than a month away from the new year! The holidays are usually a busy time for all of us, but with Ontario’s COVID-19 measures in effect, we have more time to focus on decluttering our home for the year ahead. The kitchen is a high-volume area, so it’s important to start the new year with a crisp and clutter-free kitchen. Keep on reading for some tips to get a head start on decluttering!

1. Purge the fridge and pantry
   Start the new year fresh with a full clear-out! Have three different bags ready: one each for garbage, recycling and compost. This will make everything faster and more efficient. Get rid of the fruits and vegetables that have gone bad, expired condiments and spices. It’s also a good idea to get rid of any canned goods you know you won’t be using and donate them to your local food bank.
2. Sort through all Tupperware and takeout containers
   If you’re afraid that a pile of containers might fall out every time you open your cabinet, it’s time to take a step back and re-evaluate the amount of containers you have. Get rid of plastic containers that are warped, stained badly or have missing lids. Only keep the ones that are in good condition.
3. Clear all counters
   If your counters are usually cluttered 365 days during the year, make it a resolution to keep them free of clutter for 2021. Instead of leaving your toaster, tea pot, spice rack, knife block, canister of wooden spoons, etc., find a new home for them in an accessible part of the kitchen. This could be the inside of a cabinet or on a shelf.
4. Sort through your appliances
   Just like your plastic containers, small appliances also tend to take up valuable space in the counter and cabinets. Have a look through all of them and donate the ones you rarely use. You’ll thank yourself when you need more space in the future.
