How to Keep Your Kitchen Clean and Sanitized
Your kitchen is the heart of your home. We spend a lot of our time in our kitchens with friends and family, and with the coronavirus pandemic, everyone is working and studying from home which means we spend a lot more to spend. It’s important now more than ever to keep this entire space sanitized and free of bacteria. Here are some different ways to properly clean and disinfect your kitchen.
- Make it a habit to clean all commonly used surfaces in your kitchen on a daily basis. This includes the counters, tables, cutting boards, the outside of the refrigerator, stove knobs, spice racks, cabinet doors, etc. Use warm water and soap to remove all the dirt.
- A simple cleaning is not enough, and the next step is to sanitize. Disinfect all surfaces using disinfectants such as alcohol, bleach and hydrogen peroxide. Mix ½ cup of bleach with a gallon of water – this can be used as a disinfectant for your countertop, sink, kitchen tiles, refrigerator and stainless-steel appliances. Let the solution dry for about five minutes, rinse it off and then air dry. Bleach can damage certain surfaces, so check the manufacturer’s directions for speciality countertops. Don’t forget to wear gloves and protective eyewear!
- Replace all kitchen towels and dishcloths on a regular basis. It’s something that you don’t want to hear, but all of your kitchen towels are most likely full of bacteria —especially when you don’t change them often enough. Your kitchen towels are a breeding ground for bacteria, so make sure you throw them in the washer with hot water regularly. Have a pile of clean towels ready to be used at all times and wash them all at the end of each week.
- Make sure you’re also properly sanitizing all non-porous materials that have come into contact with raw meat such as cutting boards. If not properly cleaned, it could potentially contaminate food placed on the board afterwards. Use a bleach solution (1 tablespoon per gallon), pour it all over the board and rinse thoroughly with hot water.
- Cleaning your kitchen floor is just as important as cleaning your countertop! Kitchen floors are exposed to everything from our shoes to pet hair, dropped food and all sorts of gunk. Creating a regular mopping schedule will not only sanitize, but also help prevent the build-up of any dirt, oils, and grease.
