Cabinet Cleaning Techniques: Dos and Don’ts
For all those bakers, constant cookers, and even frequent order-in’ers, your kitchen is almost certainly the room in your house that requires the most frequent cleaning. From coffee spillages to flour dustings to frying, it does not take much for a mess to form. When it comes to cleaning your cabinetry, you want to use the right products to preserve their appearance and functionality. Here are some dos and don’ts to help you keep your kitchen cabinets in top condition.
With a little bit of creativity, your kitchen island can be an excellent addition to your home. Here are some tips to help you maximize your kitchen island’s functionality and style:
Do’s
- Mild Cleaning Solutions: Especially cabinets made from wood, opt for a gentler, non-abrasive cleaner to ensure you are not damaging the finishing and paint. Here are some preferred options:
- Mild dish soap: dilute in warm water to help remove grunge easily
- 50/50 solution of vinegar and warm water: add this into a spray bottle to remove grease
- Method Wood for Good Daily Clean: this is a great option for regular maintenance of wood cabinetry and it’s environmentally friendly
- Soft Microfibre Cloths: For all cabinetry, no matter the material, investing in soft microfibre cloths can be highly practical for regular cleaning. Not only is it less harsh on the cleaning surface but it will effectively pick up dirt and grime.
- Regular Dusting: Dust your cabinets at least once a week to prevent the buildup of debris and dirt, especially in the crevasse of the cabinets.
- Spot Cleaning: It is important to promptly address spills and stains to prevent them from setting in and causing permanent discolouration.
Dont’s
- Harsh Chemicals: Try to avoid using harsh chemicals, bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, or abrasive scouring pads which can strip the finish.
- Excess Water: When using a soft microfibre cloth, be sure to avoid soaking the cloth. Excess water can cause warping, swelling, or cracking. After you clean, be sure to go over your cabinetry again with a dry cloth.
- Wet Hinges: Be sure to avoid wetting the hinges of your cabinetry because it can cause rust. Instead, use your dry microfibre cloth to wipe away dust and grime from the metal, or place a small amount of cleaning solution on your cloth to remove stuck-on dirt. Wipe the metal dry afterward.
