4 Kitchen Remodeling Myths

Remodelling your kitchen is a major job, and if you’re thinking about doing it, the people you’ve spoken to may have given you some advice or ideas which may be inaccurate. We at Selba are kitchen experts and we’ve guided many customers through kitchen renovations.

Here are a few of the most common misconceptions we’ve heard and why they aren’t true.

1. You Can Figure It Out On Your Own

You’ve probably heard someone say that it’s better just to get started and you can add the extras or figure out some of the details later. But failing to plan your new kitchen can create issues and additional expenses.

Reworking your kitchen layout to accommodate new-sized appliances or opening the walls to adjust electrical or plumbing after you’ve done a renovation is a major headache. It’s worth working with a professional — a designer or a contractor — to ensure you’ve considered the major contingencies.

2. Bigger Is Better

We’re not saying not to maximize space, particularly when it comes to storage or countertops, because space in a kitchen is important. However, there are typically trade-offs.

A big kitchen designed primarily for hosting might make cooking dinner for two on all the other evenings more of a hassle than you’d like. Deep, difficult-to-organize cupboards where you can hide away big pots and appliances might not be as functional as open shelving or less spacious storage arrangements (or it might be more functional, depending on your situation!).

Optimize space, and think about function first.

3. Appearance Is Everything

Stay informed of the latest trends because there is often useful inspiration there. You want a kitchen that is going to wow people when they walk in. But again, prioritize function. A light-coloured marble countertop — that can be stained or scratched and generally requires more upkeep — might not be the best choice for a high-traffic kitchen counter in a home with children, for example.

4. It’s An Expense, Not An Investment

Kitchen renovations are expensive, but they aren’t a sunk cost. When and if you plan to resell your home, a kitchen that requires a renovation can be a deal-breaker for a lot of buyers which can affect the resale value. That doesn’t mean you have to break the bank during your renovation, but it is important not to cut corners. Your investment will pay off.
